Our story in Ericeira
Doca de Letras has its roots in a family history that has been tied to Ericeira for several decades.
It all began in the 1980s, when my parents arrived from England and opened the Lancastrian snack bar in the town center. That’s where our family began to put down roots in the local business community and in the daily life of Ericeira.
Later, the space became a stationery store, where newspapers, magazines, and postcards were part of the hustle and bustle of the street and the daily interactions with residents, visitors, and regular customers.
Over the years, our family has remained connected to Ericeira’s local business community, moving through different spaces and phases, yet always maintaining the same close connection to the people and the life of the town. Amid newspapers, magazines, customer service, and the many stories shared at the counter, this journey has continued to unfold.
For many years, Tabacaria Bambi played an important role in this history, keeping alive the connection to newspapers, magazines, tobacco, lottery tickets, and the little everyday habits.
In January 2022, an opportunity arose to revitalize this venture and breathe new life into the store. Thus, Doca de Letras was born, in new premises on Rua 5 de Outubro, continuing its tradition in the newspaper, magazine, and tobacco business while adding a new section dedicated to books.
Today, we’re a local store where you can find books in Portuguese and English, stationery, magazines, gifts, games, tobacco, and personalized recommendations—always with a warm welcome for our visitors.
We call it Doca de Letras because every day new things arrive for us to read, discover, and share. And because, being so close to the sea, it made sense for this story to also have a dock where words could arrive.
